Jakarta. Another Jackie Chan movie is about to hit Indonesian cinemas on Wednesday. The 71-year-old famed martial artist now stars as Wong Tak-Chung, a retired tracking expert cop who decides to have one final dance at the job on “The Shadow’s Edge”. To top it all off, the movie stars Tony Leung Ka Fai -- another household name in the Hong Kong film industry. Leung portrays the antagonist Fu Longsheng, a cold-blooded thief who has been on the run for years.

Wong has assembled a team of undercover cops to catch a group of professional thieves, which eventually leads to Fu. His team includes the young cop He Qiuguo (Zhang Zifeng), with whom Wong shares a father-and-daughter-like bond with. Her biological father was Wong’s late, old friend and a fellow policeman who was killed while undercover. Running for two and a half hours, “The Shadow’s Edge” alternates between the good guys and the bad guys, serving the audience a good balance of both worlds. But the fun begins when the big guys, Wong and Fu, finally meet. 

After countless stake-out attempts, the team finally identifies Fu’s whereabouts. He -- posing as a rebellious teen -- tries to get closer to the criminal, but Wong quickly steps in before the thief finds out. In a remarkable elevator scene, Wong swiftly switches his earpiece with a pair of earrings. Wong even adopts the persona of a concerned father during his daughter’s rebellious phase. He later invites Fu -- who also tries to act as a clueless elderly -- to his home for dinner. It’s moments like this that keep the audience on the edge of their seat. Their covers can get blown any minute. The two skillful actors know how to make the seemingly friendly dinner encounter intense. Even in the most intense scene, scriptwriter Yang managed to slip in some heartwarming father-and-daughter moments.

While we get to know what happens on Fu’s side thanks to the narrative switches, the audience gets lost in the internal strife within his family. His foster sons -- who all look like they are part of a boy group -- are staging a coup and are now out for his blood. Even so, the boys’ storyline brought us the scene of Fu single-handedly taking out a mob of criminals in a trap set by his own sons. Fu even has a final boss music playing in the background when this happens. This is the part when we realize that Fu is not someone you want to mess with.

As expected from a Jackie Chan movie, “The Shadow’s Edge” would mix some comedy into the story. And surprisingly, you might find yourself squealing at the cute young love moments. The ending alludes that a sequel might be on the way for “The Shadow’s Edge”. 

It is still too early to tell how this movie will do in Indonesia, although this Jackie Chan film has recorded a cumulative box office of at least $30.3 million. “The Shadow’s Edge” has Wen Junhui (Jun), a member of the South Korean boyband SEVENTEEN, which has been gaining massive popularity in Indonesia. For fans -- or Carats as they prefer to be called -- who are only buying “Shadow’s Edge” tickets for Jun, the boy does not have that much screentime and only has a few lines tops. However, fans of Chinese movies will likely enjoy the Jackie Chan-Tony Leung deadly combo.
