Jakarta. Indonesia's Tourism and Creative Economy Minister, Sandiaga Uno, is eyeing pop sensation Taylor Swift to perform in Indonesia as part of an effort to boost the country's tourism sector. 

In a recent interview with Bloomberg Television, Minister Uno highlighted the success of Taylor Swift's concerts in Singapore and Australia, emphasizing the positive economic outcomes known as "Swiftnomics." 

"We need what Singapore and Australian governments have been able to do which is bring in Taylor Swift. We need Swiftnomics in Indonesia," Sandiaga said.

A study conducted by Cole Anderson and Andy Archuleta from the Common Sense Institute in July 2023 showed that Taylor Swift's two Denver Eras shows contributed an estimated $140 million (Rp 2.18 trillion) to Colorado's GDP.

The study revealed that concertgoers spent an average of $1,327 on various show-related expenses, including tickets, travel, merchandise, lodging, and food. This translated to over $200 million in direct consumer spending associated with the Denver concerts.

Minister Uno is optimistic about replicating this economic impact in Indonesia. To attract not only Taylor Swift but also other performers, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has set up a Rp 2 trillion tourism fund.

"We're starting with the Indonesia Tourism Fund. Hopefully, with this fund, Indonesia will be able to bid for good events, not just music, but sports, and cultural events too," he explained.

In a related development, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin disclosed on Sunday that Taylor Swift would exclusively perform "The Eras Tour" in Singapore, excluding other ASEAN countries.

Thavisin told Business Today that the music promoter AEG had informed him of the deal. The Singaporean government reportedly offered a contract ranging from $2 million to $3 million per show as compensation for Taylor Swift's exclusive performance in the country.

Recognized as her largest tour, the Eras tour spans 151 shows across five continents. In Singapore, Taylor Swift is scheduled to hold her concert at the National Stadium from March 2 to March 9, 2024.
