Jakarta Plans Citywide Blackout to Mark World Environment Day
Jakarta. The Jakarta Provincial Government will switch off lights across the Indonesian capital for one hour on Saturday night as part of a campaign to promote energy conservation and reduce carbon emissions in commemoration of World Environment Day.
The coordinated blackout will take place from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time across all five municipalities of Jakarta, covering government buildings, commercial districts, shopping centers, hotels, restaurants and apartment complexes.
“By turning off lights for just 60 minutes, we can give meaningful breathing space to our planet,” the Jakarta administration said in a statement posted on its official Instagram account on Friday.
The government said all provincial government offices and facilities would participate in the blackout, although essential public services such as hospitals, clinics and healthcare centers would remain fully operational.
Street lighting along several major roads and thoroughfares will also be turned off during the campaign.
Affected areas include key roads such as Jalan Sudirman, Jalan MH Thamrin, Jalan Rasuna Said, Jalan Asia Afrika, Jalan Daan Mogot and Jalan Yos Sudarso, as well as government office complexes across Central, North, East, West and South Jakarta.
Several of Jakarta’s best-known landmarks will also go dark for the hour-long event, including National Monument, the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle, the Arjuna Wiwaha statue, the Youth Statue, the General Sudirman statue and Jakarta City Hall.
The provincial government previously carried out a similar campaign on April 25. According to official data, the one-hour blackout reduced electricity consumption by 96.91 megawatt-hours and generated electricity cost savings of around Rp 140.2 million ($8,600).
Authorities said the initiative also cut carbon emissions by an estimated 77.53 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
