Jakarta. Legendary Indonesian songwriter James F. Sundah died on Thursday in New York at the age of 70, according to a statement released by his family.

Throughout his career, James composed numerous songs performed by some of Indonesia’s most celebrated singers, including Chrisye, Ruth Sahanaya, and Krisdayanti.

His most iconic composition was Lilin-Lilin Kecil (“Little Candles”), released in 1977 and famously performed by Chrisye. The song remains one of the most enduring classics in Indonesian popular music.

“With deep sorrow and love, we announce the passing of James F. Sundah, beloved husband, father, friend, and renowned Indonesian songwriter. James passed away peacefully in New York on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at 11:28 a.m.,” his wife, Lia Sundah, said in a statement.

James’ health had deteriorated over the past month, prompting family members and supporters in Indonesia to organize online interfaith prayer gatherings for his recovery.

According to Lia, James had been receiving treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center before his passing.
