Jakarta. Indonesia is seeking to develop its senior-friendly tourism to attract older adults.

Southeast Asia's biggest economy is seeing dollar signs in the world's aging population such as Japan and the Netherlands. And so, the government is mulling developing its tourism sector in a way that it prioritizes easy access, flexible travel schedules, and comfort for the senior adults. The services must also be tailored to the physical, psychological, and social conditions of the older travelers.

According to Tourism Ministry spokesperson Nia Niscaya, this can strengthen Indonesia's position as a leading tourist destination, both in Asia and globally.

"The Tourism Ministry is focused on building a business ecosystem that can comprehensively meet the needs of senior tourists," Nia was quoted as saying by the state news agency Antara.

This calls for a multi-stakeholder approach. Other efforts include human capital competencies and providing more friendly facilities for senior tourists.

The government is also encouraging the development of holistic tourism packages that combine the experience of enjoying Indonesia's rich culture and natural beauty with wellness services and healthy eating habits, according to Nia.

Indonesia reported to have amassed 6.07 million foreign tourist arrivals from January to May 2026.
