‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Review: Mutant Duo Movie Meets Expectations
Jakarta. “Deadpool & Wolverine” -- the Marvel movie that brings us two mutants of clashing personalities -- is finally playing in Indonesian cinemas.
The latest film from director Shawn Levy follows Wade Wilson, popularly known as Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), going through a lifetime crisis as he retires from being a masked mercenary. But the Avenger wanna-be Deadpool finally suits up again after the Time Variance Authority (TVA) abducts him and reveals that his timeline will fall apart. The loudmouth Deadpool eventually has to team up with the no-nonsense Wolverine (Hugh Jackman).
Just like the previous installments featuring the red-suit mercenary, “Deadpool & Wolverine” gives us a fun take on a classic superhero movie. The mix of Deadpool’s “breaking-the-fourth-wall” humor, action stunts, and great playlist are among the things that make this two-hour-long movie really deliver. Expect to see a lot of jokes poking fun at how 20th Century Fox -- which owned the rights to the “X-Men”-- got acquired by Disney.
Deadpool and Wolverine make a dynamite mutant duo with incredible chemistry. Surprisingly, despite how the movie comes packed with humor, the two still have stories that make the audience feel for them. Deadpool fears that he does not matter in life, while Wolverine can’t move on from his past mistakes -- both situations that we encounter in our lives.
And yes, the final scene of how Deadpool-Wolverine teamed up to save the day is jaw-dropping and touching. Madonna’s 1989 single “Like A Prayer” playing in the background makes the scene even better.
Watching “Deadpool & Wolverine” is like walking down the memory lane. Superhero fans will likely marvel at the epic cameos, among others, by Chris Evans. You, just like Deadpool, might think that he would return as the iconic Captain America. But boy, you are wrong. Evans reprises his role as the Human Torch Johnny Storm from “Fantastic Four”. The movie also has appearances by Elektra (Jennifer Garner) and Blade (Wesley Snipes), to name a few.
The tracks playing on “Deadpool & Wolverine” are mainly blasts from the past, including Avril Lavigne’s “I’m With You” and Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris”. “Deadpool & Wolverine” also starts off the movie strong with *NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” as Deadpool single-handedly takes out his opponents while dancing “in sync” to the song.
All in all, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is a superhero movie that meets expectations.
