Jakarta. The ancient Buddhist temple of Borobudur is preparing for the Vesak celebration later this month, expecting thousands of pilgrims to attend.

Located in Magelang, Central Java, the temple has been designated as a major religious tourism destination, according to Maya Watono, a director of the state-owned tourism company InJourney.

Vesak, also known as Buddha Day or Waisak in Indonesia, is the most significant celebration for Buddhists across Asia. The week-long festivals at Borobudur are set to feature a blend of religious and cultural activities scheduled for May 18-25, Maya said.

"This will be an extraordinary moment for Buddhists across Indonesia, as Borobudur Temple's significance will be elevated from being solely a cultural heritage site to becoming a prominent destination for religious tourism," she said during a press conference at Sarinah Shopping Mall in Central Jakarta on Wednesday.

The festivals aim to reestablish Borobudur Temple as a focal point for religious activities among Buddhist followers in Indonesia and beyond, with live streaming planned to reach numerous countries, Maya added.

Moreover, the Vesak festivals will serve to promote religious tolerance and harmony in the diverse nation.

"We hope the message from Borobudur Temple will transcend national boundaries, showcasing how the diverse people and cultures in Indonesia can coexist harmoniously," Maya said.

She further noted that construction will continue at Borobudur Temple to enhance capacity and supporting facilities, including a museum, as the government endeavors to make it the largest Buddhist temple in the world.
