Bali. The Indonesian government has issued guidelines for Eid eve celebrations in Bali, where the Muslim tradition of takbiran parades may coincide with Nyepi, the Hindu Day of Silence observed across the island.

Eid al-Fitr celebrations typically begin with takbiran, when Muslims gather to chant praises to God, often accompanied by drum processions and community parades on the night before the holiday.

However, Bali’s Hindu community observes Nyepi with a day of complete silence, during which residents remain indoors and avoid activities that could disturb the island’s quiet atmosphere.

With the two major religious observances expected to potentially fall on March 19, the Religious Affairs Ministry said the guidelines are intended to ensure both communities can observe their traditions peacefully.

“We have coordinated with the regional government and religious leaders in Bali from the beginning,” ministry spokesperson Thohib Al Asyhar said Monday.

“In principle, if the timing coincides, worshippers of both religions in Bali can still celebrate with mutual respect and understanding,” he added.

Restrictions on Takbiran Activities
Under the proposed guidelines, Muslims are encouraged to perform takbiran at nearby mosques or prayer rooms on foot.

The use of loudspeakers, firecrackers, or other loud noise-producing activities will not be permitted, while limited lighting for religious activities will still be allowed.

Takbiran observances may take place between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. local time, according to the ministry.

Mosque administrators will be responsible for ensuring the celebrations are conducted in an orderly manner and must coordinate with local security authorities. Sub-district officials will also assist in maintaining public order.

“These guidelines apply only in Bali and will be implemented only if the eve of Eid coincides with Nyepi,” Thohib said.

According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Bali is home to about 3.8 million Hindus, making up the vast majority of the province’s population.

Muslims form the second-largest religious group, numbering 449,805 people.

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, although the exact date of the holiday depends on the sighting of the new moon, which determines the start of the Islamic month of Shawwal.
