Andrea Bocelli Blends Music and Heritage in Borobudur Concert
Magelang, Central Java. Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli performed before thousands of fans at the Lumbini Park complex near Borobudur Temple on Saturday, combining world-class classical music with the grandeur of one of Indonesia’s most iconic cultural landmarks.
The concert, part of Bocelli’s Romanza 30th Anniversary World Tour, attracted audiences from across Indonesia and overseas, offering a rare opportunity to see the internationally acclaimed singer perform against the backdrop of the ancient Buddhist temple in Magelang, Central Java.
The historic setting added a distinctive atmosphere to the performance, with the temple’s imposing architecture providing a striking backdrop for the evening’s music.
Some concertgoers travelled long distances to attend the show, drawn not only by Bocelli’s reputation but also by the opportunity to experience an international concert at a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Eva Puspita Sari, who travelled from Jakarta, said she had deliberately made the trip to experience Bocelli’s performance at Borobudur.
She arrived in Yogyakarta on Friday before continuing to Magelang for the concert.
“I’m so happy to be here for Andrea Bocelli’s 30th anniversary concert at one of the wonders of the world, Borobudur,” Eva said on Saturday evening.
She said watching the tenor perform had long been a personal ambition, making the opportunity to see him at Borobudur particularly special.
For Eva, the combination of Bocelli’s music and the temple’s historic architecture offered an experience that a conventional concert hall could not provide.
Her favorite song was Vivo per Lei, which she said carried a deep meaning about life.
Another Jakarta visitor, Astrid, said she was drawn to the concert by the opportunity to experience international music alongside Indonesia’s cultural heritage.
She also praised the event's organization, particularly the arrangements for visitors from their arrival at the venue to entering the concert area.
“I was really impressed. Borobudur managed to organize a concert like this while making visitors comfortable. Everything, from arriving at the venue to entering the concert area, was very convenient,” Astrid said.
She said watching Bocelli perform in Borobudur offered something different from attending concerts in Jakarta, allowing audiences to appreciate both the tenor’s vocal performance and the beauty of Indonesia’s cultural heritage.
Her favorite was The Prayer, one of Bocelli’s best-known songs.
Astrid described the concert as a rare opportunity, with the combination of international music and the grandeur of Borobudur making the journey to Magelang worthwhile.
The Romanza 30th Anniversary World Tour celebrates three decades since the release of Bocelli’s Romanza album, a milestone in the Italian singer’s international music career.
Following his performance at Borobudur, Bocelli is scheduled to continue his Indonesian tour with a concert at JIExpo Kemayoran in Jakarta on Nov. 3.
The two performances in Central Java and Jakarta are expected to attract a combined audience of around 16,000 people.
The Borobudur concert marks another occasion for Indonesia to bring international entertainment to its cultural heritage sites, combining global music performances with the country's historic landmarks.
