'Agak Laen' Hits 9 Million Viewers, Becoming Indonesia's Second Most-Watched Film
Jakarta. The Indonesian comedy film "Agak Laen" (A Bit Different) has surpassed 9 million viewers on its 53rd day in theaters, securing its place as the second most-watched Indonesian movie. It is currently playing in US theaters.
The confirmation of this viewership milestone came from a short video posted on the Instagram account of the film's producer, Ernest Prakasa. "Nine million," wrote Ernest, accompanied by a tearful emoji.
This remarkable achievement is noteworthy considering the initially modest expectations for the film, yet audiences continue to flock to theaters to watch "Agak Laen."
However, the film still falls short of surpassing the all-time highest-grossing film in Indonesia, "KKN di Desa Penari" (Field Work Lecture in Penari Village). Released in 2022, the horror film has been watched by 10,061,033 viewers.
Undoubtedly, this achievement has exceeded Ernest's expectations. Previously, the filmmaker, born on January 29, 1982, predicted that "Agak Laen" would only be watched by more than 2 million viewers.
"Who would expect the audience to be this many? I thought it would be 1-2 million because we watched it and the film is really funny," said Ernest.
Ernest Prakasa himself was skeptical that his film could surpass the 10 million viewership mark. "I think it's somewhat impossible to reach 10 million," he said.
"Agak Laen" premiered in the United States on March 22nd. Before "Agak Laen," the only Indonesian film distributed in regular US cinema networks was the action-packed movie "The Raid." "Agak Laen" was distributed by Antenna Entertainments, with assistance from Prathyangira Cinemas in the United States.
The horror-comedy film, released on Feb. 1, features four comedian friends, namely Bene Dion, Oki Rengga, Indra Jegel, and Boris Bokir. Each of them comes from a different background and needs money to fulfill their life's dreams.
By opening a haunted house attraction at a night market, the fortunes of these four youths change after a visitor dies inside their attraction. To cover up the incident, they bury the man inside the attraction.
