Seoul. Choi Soon-hwa, an 81-year-old South Korean fashion model, came up short in her attempt to become the oldest Miss Universe contestant after competing in the Miss Universe Korea pageant against much younger rivals.

Dressed in a beaded white gown, Choi, with her silver hair, walked confidently across the stage and even participated in a singing contest during the pageant held Monday at a hotel in Seoul. While she didn't win the title, she was honored with the "Best Dresser" award.

The crown went to 22-year-old fashion student Han Ariel, who will represent South Korea at the 73rd Miss Universe competition in Mexico City this November.

Choi, who began her modeling career in her 70s after working as a hospital care worker, was one of 31 finalists for the national pageant.

“Even at this age, I had the courage to seize an opportunity and face a challenge,” Choi told The Associated Press ahead of the event. “I hope people see me and realize that it's never too late to pursue your dreams and find joy in life by pushing your boundaries.”

Choi's participation was made possible by recent changes to the Miss Universe competition, which previously limited contestants to ages 18 to 28. The age limit was lifted this year to promote greater inclusivity.

Organizers of the Miss Universe Korea pageant also removed the swimsuit segment and eligibility criteria related to education, height, and language proficiency, allowing a wider range of women to compete.
