A local identified as Rico Hermawan and Canadian national Amel Quali Taher were both killed instantly at the scene of the blasts at the intersection of Jalan M.H. Thamrin and Jalan K.H. Wahid Hasyim, near the Sarinah department store.

The death toll now stands at eight — four confirmed perpetrators, three civilians and one man whose role police are still trying to confirm. The incident injured 32 people.

At least five explosions were heard coming from the Starbucks outlet at the Skyline building next to Sarinah and the police post in front of the department store around 10:50 a.m. on Thursday.

The blasts were quickly followed by a sporadic exchange of gunfire between the assailants and police.

Police have identified Bahrun Naim, an Indonesian jihadi based in Syria with the Sunni militant group Islamic State, as the mastermind behind the plot. Islamic State supporters have also claimed responsibility for the attack.
