Weekly Market Wrap: JCI Hits Record, Wall Street Rebounds, Asian Markets React to Tariff News
Jakarta. Indonesia's stock market posted modest gains this week, with the Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) climbing 0.6 percent to close at 8,099.33 on Friday, up from 8,051.12 the previous week. The index briefly hit an all-time high of 8,126.55 on Wednesday.
Trading activity picked up alongside the index, with the average daily transaction frequency rising 15.6 percent to 2.45 million trades, and average daily volume increasing 12.1 percent to 47.08 billion shares, according to data from the IDX. Market capitalization also expanded 1.74 percent to Rp 14,888 trillion ($892.8 billion). However, the average daily transaction value slipped slightly by 1.25 percent to Rp 28.19 trillion.
Foreign investors closed the week with a net purchase of Rp 583.10 billion. Despite this, they remain net sellers for the year, recording a net outflow of Rp 53.6 trillion so far in 2025.
Investor sentiment was influenced by global economic indicators, particularly from the United States. The S&P 500 rose 0.6 percent on Friday, ending a three-day losing streak, driven by an inflation report that aligned with economists' expectations, suggesting potential for continued Federal Reserve interest rate cuts. However, a stronger-than-expected US jobless claims report on Thursday raised concerns about the pace of future rate cuts, affecting market confidence. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.7 percent and the Nasdaq added 0.4 percent.
The next big event for Wall Street could be a looming shutdown of the US government, with a deadline set for next week. But investors have experience with such political impasses, and they have had limited impact on the market before. “The market and broader macroeconomic effects of a shutdown, even lengthy ones, are often mere blips on the charts,” according to Brian Jacobsen, chief economist at Annex Wealth Management.
European markets also saw positive momentum, with France’s CAC 40 climbing 1 percent, while Asian markets delivered mixed results. South Korea’s Kospi fell 2.5 percent, and Japan’s Nikkei 225 declined 0.9 percent, weighed down by losses in pharmaceutical stocks.
