PLN To Build Thousands of EV Charging Stations
Jakarta. State-run electricity company PLN plans to build more than 5,000 charging stations for electric motorcycles and electric cars across Indonesia in the next few years, its CEO said on Friday.
The company currently has 6,700 charging stations for electric motorbikes and will add the number to 12,000, Darmawan Prasodjo told reporters in Jakarta.
The number of PLN charging stations for electric cars, however, remains small at around 600 mainly on Java Island.
PLN considers partnering with shopping malls, banks, fast food restaurants, and other public facilities with spacious parking spaces to build charging stations for electric cars.
"That's because we don't have many strategic locations with sufficient parking areas," Darmawan said.
"Under any condition, we will work to ensure a smooth transition from fossil fuel vehicles to electric vehicles," he added.
Darmawan said the company will introduce an app in which PLN customers can choose and buy an electric motorcycle that enjoys the Rp 7 million ($453) government subsidy starting on March 20.
The government recently announced three electric motorcycle brands -- Gesits, Volta, and Selis -- that meet the local content requirement, thus entitled to the subsidy.
According to Darmawan, priorities will be given to low-income families who subscribe to PLN's 900 VA of power consumption or lower.
