Jakarta. For the first time this year, no Chinese electric vehicle (EV) models appeared in Indonesia’s top 10 best-selling cars in September, as the market was once again dominated by Japanese brands, particularly Toyota and Daihatsu.

According to data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), total vehicle wholesales -- shipments from factories to dealers -- reached 62,071 units in September, up 0.5 percent from 61,777 units in August. However, sales fell 15.1 percent year-on-year, compared to 73,108 units in September 2024.

Cumulatively, from January to September 2025, Indonesia recorded 561,819 units in wholesale car sales, down 11.3 percent from 633,660 units in the same period last year. Meanwhile, retail sales -- dealer-to-customer deliveries -- also declined 10 percent year-on-year to 585,917 units, from 657,448 units.

The September results underscored the continued dominance of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in Indonesia, even as the government pushes for faster adoption of EVs through tax incentives and local production policies.

The 10 best-selling car models in Indonesia for September 2025 were as follows:

  1. Toyota Kijang Innova (Reborn & Zenix) — 6,143 units
  2. Daihatsu Gran Max (pickup) — 3,932 units
  3. Toyota Avanza — 2,804 units
  4. Suzuki Carry (pickup) — 2,682 units
  5. Toyota Calya — 2,523 units
  6. Toyota Rush — 2,273 units
  7. Honda Brio — 2,104 units
  8. Mitsubishi Destinator — 2,042 units
  9. Daihatsu Gran Max (minibus & blind van) — 1,918 units
  10. Daihatsu Sigra — 1,738 units
