Markets Shudder After Trump’s Tariff Threat, Jakarta Stocks Follow Suit
Jakarta. Almost all major stock markets across Asia fell on Monday morning, following a sharp sell-off on Wall Street last Friday as renewed trade tensions between the United States and China rattled investor sentiment.
Indonesia’s benchmark Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) opened sharply lower, plunging 88.21 points, or 1.07 percent, to 8,169.64 in the first trading session. The index moved within the range of 8,133–8,173 in early trade.
According to RTI data, about 1.63 billion shares worth Rp 1.29 trillion ($77.9 million) changed hands in 149,819 transactions. A total of 85 stocks advanced, 405 declined, and 151 remained unchanged.
Phintraco Sekuritas said investors are expected to monitor Indonesia’s foreign direct investment data for Q3 2025, which will be released on Wednesday, as a key domestic driver this week.
On the global front, Wall Street’s months-long calm shattered on Friday last week after US President Donald Trump threatened to sharply raise tariffs on China, fueling fears of a renewed trade war.
The S&P 500 slumped 2.7 percent, marking its worst day since April, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 878 points, or 1.9 percent, and the Nasdaq Composite plunged 3.6 percent. Nearly six out of every seven stocks in the S&P 500 fell, with declines led by major tech companies such as Nvidia and Apple.
“We have been contacted by other countries who are extremely angry at this great trade hostility, which came out of nowhere,” Trump posted on Truth Social, adding there was “no reason” to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping during his upcoming trip to South Korea.
Analysts said the US market may have been primed for a pullback after the S&P 500’s near 35 percent surge since April, which raised concerns about overvaluation, particularly among artificial intelligence stocks, echoing fears of a possible tech bubble.
Across Asia, regional markets opened lower. South Korea’s KOSPI dropped 1.6 percent to 3,550, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index edged down 0.13 percent to 17,034.
Investors in China are eyeing upcoming data on trade, inflation, and banking activity, while in Europe, attention will turn to Euro Area industrial production, German ZEW sentiment index, and UK GDP and labor market reports later this week.
Meanwhile, the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) said it is monitoring Unusual Market Activity (UMA) in shares of Agro Yasa Lestari (AYLS) and Mora Telematika Indonesia (MORA) on Monday. The bourse noted irregular price movements in the two stocks and urged investors to review the companies’ disclosures and performance before making investment decisions.
