Jakarta. South Korean automaker Kia plans to introduce an electric multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that will be produced in Indonesia by the end of 2026, as part of its commitment to supporting the development of the country’s domestic electric vehicle industry.

“At the end of 2026, we plan to launch an electric MPV that will be produced in Indonesia,” said Bayu Riyanto, managing director of Kia Sales Indonesia, speaking in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Bayu said the company has yet to disclose further details regarding the specifications or model lineup of the electric MPV, including how many variants will be introduced by the end of 2026.

Unlike fellow South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Company, which has aggressively rolled out electric vehicle models and established local assembly facilities in Indonesia, Kia is taking a more measured approach to its EV expansion in the country.

Kia’s electric vehicle launches in Indonesia will be carried out gradually, taking into account several factors, including infrastructure readiness and local EV usage patterns, before the Kia principal fully assumes control of the brand’s marketing network in the country.

The company said this approach is aimed at ensuring an optimal ownership experience for consumers, particularly as Indonesia continues to develop its EV charging infrastructure and supporting ecosystem.

On the same day, Kia Sales Indonesia officially assumed full control of Kia’s vehicle marketing operations in Indonesia, directly representing the Korean principal and replacing Kreta Indo Artha as the brand’s sole authorized distributor.

The change in the sole brand holder structure is part of an organizational strategy to strengthen Kia’s long-term commitment to the Indonesian market. The direct presence of the principal is also expected to enhance engagement with Indonesian consumers and support the brand’s broader electrification roadmap in the country.
