Jakarta. Jakarta stocks rose 0.29% on Wednesday as dovish comments from a US Federal Reserve official, stronger-than-expected Chinese trade data and an upgraded Indonesian growth forecast from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) lifted investor sentiment.

Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) gained 17 points to close at 5,923, after moving between 5,906 and 6,009 during the session. Trading volume reached 31.3 billion shares, with turnover totaling Rp 11.26 trillion ($628.67 million) across more than 1.4 million transactions. A total of 280 stocks advanced, 321 declined and 194 were unchanged.

The gains came alongside mostly weaker regional markets, with investors weighing improving economic signals against uncertainty over the outlook for US monetary policy and geopolitical risks.

Pilarmas Investindo Sekuritas said investors were monitoring comments from New York Fed President John Williams, who said another interest rate hike this year remained appropriate but saw no need for further monetary tightening in 2027.

“The statement was one of the considerations for investors in assessing the direction of US monetary policy going forward,” Pilarmas wrote in its research note on Wednesday.

China also provided support for market sentiment as exports surged in September 2026 at their fastest pace since early 2021, while imports exceeded market expectations. The data pointed to resilient external demand, although the country’s domestic economy continued to face challenges.

“China’s trade surplus widened to $133.53 billion in September, exceeding the market forecast of $110 billion and August’s surplus of $119.09 billion,” Pilarmas said.

China’s annual inflation also edged up to 0.9% in September from 0.8% in August, although the reading remained slightly below market expectations of 1%.

Domestically, the IMF raised its forecast for Indonesia’s economic growth in 2026 to 5.1% from 5%, citing ongoing efforts to strengthen household purchasing power and higher government spending.

Indonesia’s economic resilience amid slowing global growth could help sustain investor confidence, Pilarmas said. However, geopolitical tensions remained a risk to the economic outlook and financial market movements.

“Nevertheless, market participants still need to monitor risks from geopolitical conflicts that could disrupt the economic outlook and financial market movements,” the brokerage said.

Regional stocks were mixed despite the gains in Jakarta. Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 slipped less than 0.1%, while South Korea’s Kospi fell 0.4% amid recent volatility. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index shed 0.1%, and the Shanghai Composite Index declined nearly 0.9%.
