Jakarta Stocks Fall 1% as BI Holds Rate and Trump Delays Putin Meeting
Jakarta. Indonesian shares fell on Wednesday as investors reacted to Bank Indonesia’s decision to keep its benchmark rate unchanged and renewed geopolitical uncertainty after US President Donald Trump postponed his planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) fell 85.53 points, or 1.04 percent, to 8,152 at the close, moving within a range of 8,141–8,261 throughout the session.
Trading volume reached 29.4 billion shares with a turnover of Rp 22.9 trillion ($1.4 billion) across 2.4 million transactions. Gainers totaled 321, while 349 stocks declined and 139 were unchanged.
Bank Indonesia decided to maintain the BI Rate at 4.75 percent during its Board of Governors Meeting on Oct. 21–22, 2025, along with the Deposit Facility Rate at 3.75 percent and Lending Facility Rate at 5.50 percent.
“This decision is consistent with BI’s outlook that inflation in 2025 and 2026 will remain within the target range of 2.5±1 percent, while supporting rupiah stability in line with economic fundamentals,” BI Governor Perry Warjiyo said during an online press conference.
Pilarmas Sekuritas noted the policy reflected a “pro-stability” stance, aiming to reinforce rupiah stability and control inflation expectations.
The rate decision weighed on banking shares.
- Bank Central Asia (BBCA) slipped 225 points or 2.65 percent to Rp 8,250 per share.
- Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BBRI) weakened 50 points or 1.33 percent to Rp 3,710.
- Bank Negara Indonesia (BBNI) dropped 20 points or 0.49 percent to Rp 4,030.
- Bank Mandiri (BMRI) fell 30 points or 0.69 percent to Rp 4,320 per share.
Externally, Pilarmas wrote in their research on Wednesday that markets were unsettled after Trump decided to delay his meeting with Putin, calling it unlikely to yield results. He also expressed uncertainty over a planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, part of broader efforts to ease trade tensions and tariff disputes.
Asian markets moved mostly lower. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 0.8 percent, Shanghai Composite shed 0.1 percent, and Australia’s ASX 200 lost 0.7 percent. South Korea’s Kospi, however, rose 1.6 percent.
Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 wavered between slight gains and losses a day after its parliament chose Sanae Takaichi as the country’s first female prime minister.
