Jakarta. Indonesia’s digital economy has generated at least Rp 44.55 trillion ($2.7 billion) in tax revenue over the past few years as of Nov. 30, according to government data on Monday.

The latest figure combines the tax revenue from digital goods, financial technology (fintech) or peer-to-peer lending, crypto assets, as well as the government procurement information system (SIPP).

"The Rp 44.55 trillion tax revenue shows how large the digital economy is contributing to the state receipts," senior tax official Rosmauli said.

Indonesia began collecting value-added tax (VAT) from digital goods and services in July 2020. The revenue from this sector had totaled Rp 34.54 trillion as of 2025, all contributed by 215 companies. In 2020, the digital VAT totaled Rp 731.4 billion in 2020 before jumping to Rp 3.9 trillion the following year. The succeeding growth trend is as follows: Rp 5.51 trillion (2022), Rp 6.76 trillion (2023), Rp 8.44 trillion (2024), and Rp 9.19 trillion (2025).

By November, the government had appointed as many as 254 eligible digital companies to collect taxes from the transactions made in their respective platforms. OpenAI — the company behind the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT — became the latest addition to this list of digital VAT collectors.

Southeast Asia’s biggest digital economy registered Rp 1.81 trillion in crypto taxes within the same period. Indonesia’s annual crypto tax revenue had almost tripled from just Rp 246.45 billion in 2022 to Rp 719.61 billion in 2025.

Taxes from financial technology (fintech) or peer-to-peer lending activities totaled Rp 4.27 trillion in 2022-2025. This sector’s collections witnessed a similar jump from Rp 446.39 billion in 2022 to Rp 1.24 trillion about three years later.

SIPP collects taxes from other digital economy businesses. The system has collected at least Rp 3.94 trillion in tax revenue since 2022, data showed.
