Indonesian Stocks Slide Below 5,800 as Oil Prices, MSCI Concerns Weigh
Jakarta. Indonesian stocks fell below 5,900 in early trading on Tuesday as Brent crude prices remained above $100 per barrel, the rupiah weakened, and uncertainty over global geopolitical tensions and MSCI-related issues weighed on investor sentiment.
Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) fell 0.36%, or 22 points, to 5,914 before dropping below 5,800 later in the session.
In early trading, investors exchanged 1.53 billion shares worth Rp 364.16 billion ($20.3 million) across 62,631 transactions. A total of 132 stocks rose, 316 declined, and 218 were unchanged.
Phintraco Sekuritas said persistent global uncertainty, elevated oil prices, concerns over potential capital outflows from Indonesia's bond market, rupiah weakness, and MSCI-related issues had weighed on the domestic stock market.
“Oil prices remaining at high levels could widen the state budget deficit and potentially push the trade balance further into deficit. Meanwhile, rumors related to MSCI have raised concerns and uncertainty among investors,” Phintraco Sekuritas said.
The brokerage also highlighted sanctions imposed by the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) on 70 listed companies for failing to submit financial statements by the prescribed deadlines. The penalties included fines of Rp 150 million and Rp 50 million, as well as first, second, and third written warnings.
The sanctions relate to listed companies' obligation to submit interim financial statements for the period ending June 30, 2026.
“Late reporting damages a company's image in the eyes of the public, analysts, and shareholders. In addition, the obligation to pay fines could place further pressure on a company's cash flow,” Phintraco Sekuritas added.
Global markets also remained cautious amid rising inflation concerns, escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, and anticipation of economic data releases and corporate earnings reports, Kiwoom Sekuritas Indonesia said.
Geopolitical tensions have also intensified amid continued Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, including gas production facilities, which are seen as undermining the energy ceasefire previously announced by US President Donald Trump.
“Investors anticipate that renewed increases in inflation could affect the direction of the Federal Reserve's interest rate policy,” Kiwoom said.
In the US, investors are focusing on earnings reports from major banks to assess the financial sector's health and the broader economic outlook. Meanwhile, selling pressure on semiconductor stocks weighed on technology shares.
On Monday, the S&P 500 slipped 0.06%, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.44% amid selling in memory chip stocks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average bucked the trend, gaining 0.38%.
Asian markets also traded lower on Tuesday morning. As of 8:47 a.m. Jakarta time, Japan's Nikkei 225 had dropped 2.69%, while South Korea's Kospi plunged 6.19%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index slipped 0.36%, and the Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite Index declined 0.92%.
