Indonesian Stocks Rise Ahead of Q2 GDP Data as Global Tech Rally Lifts Sentiment
Jakarta. Indonesian stocks opened higher on Wednesday ahead of the release of Indonesia's second-quarter GDP data, while improving global risk appetite after strong U.S. tech earnings provided additional support.
JCakarta Composite Index (JCI) gained 18 points, or 0.3%, to 6,338 in early trade after moving within a range of 6,319 to 6,346.
Trading volume reached 1.25 billion shares in the opening minutes, with turnover totaling Rp 522.05 billion ($29.09 million) across more than 93,000 transactions. Advancers outnumbered decliners 290 to 146, while 217 stocks were unchanged.
Phintraco Sekuritas said investors are awaiting Indonesia's second-quarter economic growth data, with consensus estimates pointing to growth slowing to 5.1% year-on-year from 5.61% in the first quarter.
Meanwhile, Kiwoom Sekuritas Indonesia said economists at Bank Central Asia (BCA) project Indonesia's current account deficit (CAD) to widen to around 1.3% of GDP by the end of 2026 from 0.11% of GDP in 2025. The wider deficit is expected to be driven by higher imports amid elevated global oil prices and stronger government spending, while export growth remains limited.
Although the financial account is projected to remain in surplus and continue financing the external deficit, Kiwoom said the wider current account deficit could increase pressure on the rupiah and foreign exchange reserves if capital inflows are not strong enough.
Kiwoom also highlighted Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa's statement that the government is prepared to inject additional funds from the Budget Surplus (SAL) into state-owned banks, or Himbara, to maintain liquidity and support the economic recovery.
After previously placing Rp 400 trillion in Himbara banks, the government said it stands ready to provide additional liquidity if needed to ensure credit continues flowing to businesses and households.
"This policy is expected to support domestic demand, boost economic growth, and provide positive sentiment for the banking, consumption, and automotive sectors," Kiwoom said.
Global sentiment also improved after investor appetite for artificial intelligence-related stocks rebounded following July's sharp correction, fueled by stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings from Microsoft and Amazon.
Overnight, the S&P 500 rose 1.8% to 7,736, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.7% to 54,085, and the Nasdaq Composite jumped 2.6% to 26,584.
As of 9:21 a.m. Jakarta time, Japan's Nikkei 225 advanced 3.40%, South Korea's Kospi surged 4.62%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng edged up 0.05%, and China's Shanghai Composite gained 0.57%.
