Indonesia Targets India, Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong for Cross-Border QRIS Expansion
Jakarta. Bank Indonesia is seeking to expand its cross-border QRIS digital payment network to India, Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong as the central bank pushes to widen international acceptance of Indonesia's national QR code payment system.
Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta said on Wednesday that discussions with India are ongoing, while talks with Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong have advanced to a more detailed stage.
"We are continuing discussions with India on cross-border payments. We have also begun in-depth discussions with Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong. Hopefully, these can be implemented soon," Filianingsih said at a press conference following Bank Indonesia's monthly policy meeting.
She said the rollout of cross-border QRIS depends on each country's readiness, including regulatory frameworks, payment infrastructure, industry participation and coordination with local authorities.
Indonesia's QRIS network is currently connected with Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea and China. Bank Indonesia plans to continue expanding the network to enable Indonesian digital payments to be used in more countries.
Cross-border QRIS transactions continued to post strong growth in the second quarter of 2026. Net inbound transaction value reached Rp 1.52 trillion ($85 million), consisting of Rp 1.85 trillion in inbound transactions and Rp 330 billion in outbound transactions.
"The development of cross-border QRIS continues to show a positive trend in transaction volume, transaction value and the number of connected countries," Filianingsih said.
She said the higher net inbound value indicates that more foreign tourists are using QRIS while making purchases in Indonesia. The payment system has helped support economic activity, particularly in tourism, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), and other sectors.
More broadly, Indonesia's digital payment ecosystem continued to expand rapidly in the second quarter.
Digital payment transactions reached 16.07 billion, up 36.88% from a year earlier.
QRIS transactions more than doubled, surging 100.12% year-on-year, driven by a growing number of users and merchants adopting the payment platform.
Meanwhile, transactions processed through BI-FAST rose 38.09% from a year earlier to 1.529 billion transactions, with a total value of Rp 3.78 quadrillion.
Transactions settled through Bank Indonesia's real-time gross settlement (BI-RTGS) system increased 13.03% year-on-year to 2.63 million transactions, with a total value of Rp 53,49 quadrillion during the April-June period.
