Jakarta. Indonesia is securing the number one spot in the global ranking for tax expenditure transparency, dethroning South Korea.

The 2026 Global Tax Expenditures Transparency Index (GTETI) ranks countries based on the regularity, quality, and scope of their tax expenditure report. Indonesia has climbed one spot in the 2026 list. Followed by South Korea and Australia. Southeast Asia’s biggest economy also secured 79.9 points out of 100.

Finance Ministry spokesperson Deni Surjantoro said Monday that the tax expenditure report was crucial in ensuring a transparent monitoring of tax expenditure and incentives. The tax incentives that Indonesia had rolled out also reflected the government’s support for the overall public, as well as micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

"Households and MSMEs benefit from more than 70% of total tax expenditures, or Rp 389 trillion ($22 billion) in 2025," Deni said.

These incentives have gone into supporting basic needs, including food, housing, education, healthcare, and transportation. They also aim to create jobs and improving the quality of life.

"We remain committed to strengthening the transparency of tax expenditures as a crucial part of sound and accountable fiscal governance," Deni said.
