Indonesia Lobbies Iran to Secure Passage for Oil Tankers Through Strait of Hormuz
Jakarta. Indonesia is continuing diplomatic efforts with Iran to secure safe passage for two Pertamina oil tankers carrying crude from Saudi Arabia through the Strait of Hormuz, amid heightened tensions in the Gulf.
Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry spokesperson Dwi Anggia said the vessels and their cargo are critical to maintaining Indonesia’s national energy security.
“The Energy Ministry is coordinating intensively with the Foreign Ministry to ensure that Indonesian vessels can transit the Strait of Hormuz safely and smoothly. This is not only about the cargo, but also the safety of the crew, which is our top priority,” Dwi said in a statement on Sunday.
In 2025, Pertamina imported 135.33 million barrels of crude oil, with around 19% — or 25.36 million barrels — sourced from Saudi Arabia. The remainder came from a diverse range of suppliers, including Africa, Latin America, the United States, Malaysia, and other countries.
Indonesia also maintains long-term supply arrangements with Singapore and Malaysia for refined fuel products.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Vahd Nabyl Mulachela said the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran has been in close coordination with Iranian authorities from the outset to ensure the safety of the vessels and their crews.
“There has been a positive response from the Iranian side, which is now being followed up at the technical and operational levels,” Nabyl said.
Pertamina International Shipping, a subsidiary of state energy firm Pertamina, is working to resolve all technical and administrative requirements to allow the two vessels — Pertamina Pride and Gamsunoro — to transit the strait safely.
“Our priority remains the safety of the crew, as well as the security of the vessels and their cargo. We ask for the support and prayers of the Indonesian public so that this process can proceed smoothly,” said Pertamina Vice President for Corporate Communication Muhammad Baron.
