Jakarta. Indonesia is exploring oil investment opportunities in Guyana and Suriname as the Southeast Asian country seeks to diversify its energy sources.

The state-owned energy giant Pertamina already has overseas operations, including in Angola and Tanzania. Grata Endah Werdaningtyas, the director general for American and European Affairs at the Foreign Ministry, recently revealed that the company was looking for expansion.

“Pertamina is exploring plans to explore upstream oil and gas investment in Guyana and Suriname,” Grata was quoted as saying by the state news agency Antara on Monday.

“By investment, we mean that we become shareholders in those oil working areas,” the diplomat said.

The offshore oil reserves off the coasts of Guyana and Suriname hold immense potential. The oil production can reach up to 200,000 barrels per day by 2028. She went on to say that expansion could be strategic amidst traffic closures in the Strait of Hormuz. This vital oil shipping channel has remained closed since the US-Iran war emerged in late February.

Pertamina’s international subsidiary PIEP manages the overseas assets. The company reported that its oil and gas production reached 212.8 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day (MBOEPD) in 2025. This is equivalent to around 108% of its annual target.

Earlier this year, Deputy Foreign Minister Arif Havas Oegroseno said that Indonesia was eyeing crude reserves in Latin America besides its current Venezuelan oil field.
