Jakarta. The Indonesian government has decided to postpone the import of 1.2 million tons of raw sugar for industrial use, equivalent to nearly a third of the country’s 2025 import quota.

Of the total approved quota of 4 million tons, 70 percent has already been realized, while the remaining 30 percent is now on hold.

Deputy Agriculture Minister Sudaryono said the decision reflects the government’s focus on boosting domestic sugar production and reducing reliance on imports.

“Imports of raw sugar have already reached 70 percent of the quota. Today it was decided that the remaining 30 percent will be postponed,” Sudaryono told reporters in Jakarta on Thursday.

The government is pushing for greater self-sufficiency in food commodities, including sugar, both for household consumption and industrial needs.

“For industrial demand, we will gradually reduce imports of raw sugar until full self-sufficiency is achieved,” Sudaryono added.

According to Agriculture Ministry data, national sugar output reached 2.46 million tons in 2024, an 8.57 percent increase from 2.27 million tons the year before. Production is projected to climb further to 2.9 million tons in 2025.

The government has set a target of achieving self-sufficiency in sugar for household consumption by 2028, and for industrial use by 2030.
