Indonesia Cuts Benchmark Coal Price to $124.44 per Ton
Jakarta. The Indonesian government has set its benchmark coal price at $124.44 per ton for the first half of August 2026, down 5.62% from the level set in late July, the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry said.
The benchmark applies on a free-on-board (FOB) vessel basis, meaning the price covers the coal up to the point it is loaded onto the buyer's vessel.
The government previously set the benchmark at $131.85 per ton for the second half of July.
Despite the latest decline, the August benchmark remains substantially higher than a year earlier. The reference price stood at $102.22 per ton in August 2025, meaning the latest price represents an increase of about 21% year-on-year.
Mineral and Coal Director General Tri Winarno said the decline in the latest benchmark reflected actual coal transaction prices used in the government's calculation.
The headline price applies to coal with a calorific value above 6,000 kilocalories per kilogram on a gross-as-received (GAR) basis. GAR measures the energy content of coal in its delivered condition, including its moisture content.
Benchmark prices for other coal grades are adjusted according to quality factors including calorific value, moisture, sulfur and ash content.
For the first half of August, the government set the benchmark for 5,300 GAR coal at $93.27 per ton, while 4,100 GAR coal was priced at $65.48 per ton.
