Indonesia Adds Record 9.9 Million Capital-Market Investors Despite Stock Slump
Jakarta. Indonesia added approximately 9.9 million capital-market investors in the first seven months of 2026, the largest increase on record, pushing the country's investor base above 30 million even as the domestic stock market remained under heavy pressure.
The number of capital-market investors reached approximately 30.27 million by the end of July, up from around 20.34 million at the end of 2025, according to the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX).
"The addition of 9.9 million investors is the highest growth in the history of Indonesia's capital market," IDX President Director Jeffrey Hendrik said in Jakarta on Monday.
The figure covers investors across capital-market instruments, including stocks, bonds and mutual funds.
The rapid expansion of the investor base contrasts with the performance of Indonesian equities this year. The Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) had fallen 25.87% year-to-date as of Aug. 7, while average daily transaction value stood at Rp 22.3 trillion ($1.3 billion).
Jeffrey described the record growth in investors as one of the positive developments for Indonesia's capital market despite the pressures and challenges it has faced throughout 2026.
The IDX currently has 962 listed companies, while seven companies have conducted initial public offerings since the beginning of the year.
Financial Services Authority (OJK) Capital Market Supervision Executive Head Hasan Fawzi said most of the additional single investor identifications (SIDs) represented new investors, with younger people accounting for a significant share of the growth.
The demographic profile helps explain why the dramatic increase in investor numbers has not been accompanied by a proportionate rise in the value of assets held in the capital market, Hasan said.
Younger investors typically begin with relatively limited investment capital, but the value of their portfolios could increase as they grow older and their financial capacity improves, he added.
Hasan said the decline in the value of investors' assets this year was primarily attributable to falling share prices and market capitalization.
