Gov't Calls for Greater Mining Accountability Ahead of Minerba Convex 2026
Jakarta. Indonesia's mining industry must take greater responsibility for environmental protection, workplace safety and community development as its operations expand, a senior government official said Thursday ahead of Minerba Convex 2026, a national forum bringing together stakeholders in the mineral and coal sectors.
Tri Winarno, director general of minerals and coal at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, said the industry's contribution to national development should be measured not only by investment and economic growth but also by how responsibly companies manage natural resources and support communities affected by mining activities.
He stressed that the expansion of mining operations must be accompanied by stronger commitments to safety, environmental management and social responsibility.
The remarks came ahead of Minerba Convex 2026, scheduled for Nov. 2–3, which will bring together government representatives, mining companies, industry associations, academics and members of the public.
The event, themed "Building the Nation, Empowering Communities," will involve 18 associations representing various segments of Indonesia's mineral and coal industries.
Tri said the forum was intended to promote dialogue and cooperation among stakeholders while building a shared understanding of mining's role in national development.
The event will also provide opportunities for industry participants to exchange knowledge, strengthen professional networks and explore cooperation on issues affecting the sector.
However, the effectiveness of such collaboration will ultimately depend on whether it produces tangible improvements in resource management, environmental protection and community welfare.
Public Education and Industry Collaboration
In addition to industry discussions, Minerba Convex 2026 will feature an exhibition, educational programs, competitions and awards recognizing contributions to the management of mineral and coal resources.
The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry is also preparing educational activities aimed at helping the public, including children, better understand the mining industry.
The programs will introduce participants to various stages of mining operations, from mineral extraction and processing to downstream industrial activities, while explaining how natural resources contribute to economic development.
Organizers hope the activities will broaden public awareness of the industry's operations and its role in supporting Indonesia's economy.
The initiative also highlights the importance of transparency and public accountability, particularly in demonstrating how mining companies fulfill their environmental and social obligations.
As Indonesia continues to expand mineral processing and other downstream industries, cooperation between government, businesses, and communities will be essential to ensuring that economic benefits are accompanied by responsible resource management and improvements in local livelihoods.
