Global Energy Alliance Earmarks $1.7b for ASEAN’s Renewable Future
Jakarta. The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) has committed $1.7 billion (Rp 28.5 trillion) to accelerate clean energy adoption across Southeast Asia, aiming to boost access for four million people, create 77,000 new jobs, and cut 18 million tons of carbon emissions.
“Energy transition in ASEAN cannot be achieved in isolation. It requires coordinated, cross-sector action,” Kitty Bu, GEAPP’s Vice President for Southeast Asia, said on Wednesday. She stressed the need for joint efforts between governments, development banks, private investors, and communities to unlock climate finance and modernize regional grids.
To tackle financing hurdles, GEAPP supports the Financing Asia’s Transition Partnership (FAST-P), a blended finance platform that connects public, private, and philanthropic players to back decarbonization and climate resilience. It also partners with the Asian Development Bank to launch ENABLE, a program aimed at mobilizing funds and technical support for early-stage battery energy storage (BESS) projects across the region.
Indonesia as a Testbed
In Indonesia, GEAPP is rolling out several initiatives to showcase how renewable integration strengthens energy resilience. These include:
The country’s first grid-connected BESS system, paired with a 72.6 MW wind farm, expected to enhance reliability for 4.3 million people.
Support for PLN’s De-dieselization Program, targeting the conversion of more than 5,000 diesel plants to renewable power.
Community-based renewable pilots under the REAL initiative, such as solar-powered cold storage for fisheries in remote Maluku.
GEAPP also plays a key role in Indonesia’s Just Energy Transition (JET) efforts, providing expertise to the JET Secretariat and supporting coal retirement roadmaps. Early pilot projects include the 46 MW Tembesi floating solar plant and transition planning under Indonesia’s Energy Transition Mechanism (ETM) with PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur.
“Indonesia shows that clean energy solutions can work at scale when strong partnerships are in place and communities are at the center,” said Lucky Nurrahmat, GEAPP’s Indonesia Country Head.
According to Lucky, the next phase will require stronger private sector participation to meet rising financing and technology needs. GEAPP expects its initiatives to help avoid an additional 100 million tons of CO2 emissions while adding over 13 gigawatts of new renewable capacity.
