Fresh Year, Fresh Risk: Indonesia Stock Market Surges 1.17% in First Close of 2026
Jakarta. Indonesia’s stock market closed its first trading session of 2026 on a strong note, with the Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) jumping 101 points, or 1.17%, to finish at 8,748 on Friday, reflecting renewed risk appetite after the New Year holiday.
The benchmark index moved within a range of 8,664 to 8,748 during the session. Total trading volume reached 51.15 billion shares, with turnover amounting to Rp 22.27 trillion ($1.33 billion). Transaction frequency exceeded 3.1 million trades. Market breadth was positive, with 479 stocks advancing, 200 declining, and 131 ending flat.
Pilarmas Investindo Sekuritas said the upbeat close marked a solid start to the 2026 trading year, as the market reopened following the New Year break.
The positive tone was reinforced by government signals on macro policy alignment. Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said stronger coordination between the government and Bank Indonesia has helped bolster equity market sentiment, arguing that tighter policy synchronization should support faster economic growth than last year. “Our policies are now in sync with Bank Indonesia, so the economy should grow faster. Market participants should be ready for that,” Purbaya said.
Buying interest was especially strong among small- and mid-cap stocks. Logindo Samudramakmur (LEAD) led the gainers, soaring 33.77%. It was followed by Pelayaran Jaya Hidup Baru (PJHB) and Victoria Care (VICI), both of which surged 25%, while Humpuss Maritim Internasional (HUMI) climbed 24.81%.
On the losing side, Gowa Makassar Tourism Develop (GMTD) tumbled 12.57%. Sunson Textile (SSTM) slid 10%, Intan Baruprana Finance (IBFN) dropped 9.92%, and Garuda Maintenance Facility AeroAsia (GMFI) fell 9.76%.
According to Pilarmas, Asian regional markets mostly traded higher, supported by solid performance on Wall Street throughout last year. However, investors also weighed the latest release of the US Federal Reserve’s meeting minutes, which revealed lingering differences among policymakers over the timing and pace of interest rate cuts in 2026, even as the central bank maintained an easing bias.
“The market views the minutes as showing greater openness toward rate cuts if inflation continues to ease, although policymakers remain divided over the timing and scale,” Pilarmas wrote in its Friday note.
From the domestic front, S&P Global reported that Indonesia’s Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) stood at 51.2 in December 2025, easing from 53.3 in the previous month. Despite the slowdown, the index remained in expansionary territory, signaling continued growth in manufacturing activity.
Pilarmas noted that the data suggest manufacturing activity in December stayed consistently in expansion, supported by stronger new order demand that helped sustain production growth toward the end of 2025.
Global markets also opened 2026 with gains.
In Europe, Britain’s FTSE 100 jumped 1% in early trading to an intraday record of 10,033.94, marking the first time the index surpassed the 10,000 level.
In Asia, South Korea’s Kospi climbed 2.3% to 4,309.63, lifted by heavyweight Samsung Electronics, which surged 7.2%. Chipmaker SK Hynix, a supplier to artificial intelligence applications and a partner of Nvidia, advanced 4%.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index jumped 2.8% to 26,338.47 on a strong rally in technology stocks. Markets in Tokyo and Shanghai were closed.
Meanwhile, US stocks ended 2025 with a fourth consecutive day of losses, despite posting strong gains for the year. The S&P 500 slipped 0.7%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.6%, and the Nasdaq Composite closed 0.8% lower.
Still, the S&P 500 set 39 record highs in 2025 and finished the year up 16.4%. The Nasdaq gained 20.4% over the year, while the Dow ended 2025 with a 13% increase.
