Enggartiasto Lukita Urges Sustainable Development of Cirebon's Rattan Sector
Cirebon. Enggartiasto Lukita, former Minister of Trade of Indonesia (2016-2019) and Executive Chairman of B-Universe, is actively advocating for the preservation and development of the rattan craft industry in Cirebon.
Cirebon Regency in West Java is renowned as a major center for the rattan furniture industry, catering to both domestic and international markets.
During his visit to a rattan craftsmen and processing industry exhibition at a hotel in Cirebon, West Java, last weekend, Enggar emphasized the importance of maintaining and expanding this traditional industry.
The rattan craft industry faced challenges when artisans were asked to stop exporting raw rattan, a ban stipulated in Minister of Trade Regulation No. 22 of 2023 regarding Prohibited Export Goods.
"If the raw materials are exported, it becomes a problem. Therefore, the government previously stated that local needs must be met first," Enggar said on Saturday.
Despite the smaller local demand, Enggar noted that rattan products from Cirebon are highly sought after in the international market.
"Foreign countries love natural materials. We are faced with the alternative of synthetic rattan, but in some countries, there is a strong preference for natural rattan, leading to high international demand," he explained.
Furthermore, Enggar emphasized that comfort is a key aspect that must be maintained in rattan products.
"Innovation in design should not be neglected, as there are many developments and attractive forms for contemporary consumers," he said.
Enggar also highlighted that design evolution should consider user age. Futuristic designs may not be suitable for older users.
"For example, certain heights may not be appealing to older people. However, design trends must be aligned with market needs. I hope the rattan industry remains vibrant and continues to grow," he added.
Stefani Setiawan, Co-founder of Tukulokal, mentioned that her company is focused on developing the rattan industry. As a retailer, Tukulokal aims to raise awareness about rattan among the public.
"Rattan has many advantages, and Cirebon is the primary source because many artisans are based here, with raw materials from Sulawesi and Sumatra," Stefani said.
Tukulokal stands out due to its ability to customize designs according to customer preferences, making its products unique compared to others on the market.
"We have our in-house designer. While we export our products, locally we target restaurants, cafes, and anyone interested in collaborating with us," she concluded.
