Danantara Denies Deal with Sentul City to Develop Medical Special Economic Zone
Jakarta. Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, on Sunday denied reports that it had reached an agreement with property developer Sentul City (BKSL) to establish a medical special economic zone (SEZ).
Danantara Chief Investment Officer Pandu Sjahrir clarified there is no formal agreement between the two parties, refuting a Jakarta Globe report published on August 8.
“The circulating information is incorrect and stems from a third party’s market analysis, not from any official announcement by Danantara Indonesia,” Pandu said in a written statement.
He stressed that all strategic investment plans at Danantara undergo a rigorous governance process and comprehensive feasibility review, which includes assessing national needs, alignment with government policy, economic and social benefits, as well as financial and risk evaluations.
“Every investment decision is made to ensure that projects are not only commercially viable but also deliver significant positive impacts for Indonesia’s economy and society,” Pandu said.
He reiterated that Danantara was established with the mandate to support national strategic projects that directly contribute to economic growth, competitiveness, and equitable development. The fund’s focus spans priority sectors such as healthcare infrastructure, energy, transportation, and technology -- all carried out with principles of transparency, accountability, and sustainability.
“We are committed to sharing any significant developments through official channels at the appropriate time so that the public and stakeholders receive accurate and reliable information,” he added.
The original Jakarta Globe report, titled “Sentul City, Danantara to Develop Medical SEZ Modeled After Chengdu’s Biotown, RHB Says”, cited research from RHB Sekuritas, which claimed Danantara planned to build a healthcare SEZ on Sentul City’s land, inspired by China’s Chengdu Biotown. The same report also appeared on sister publication Investor.id.
