Cheaper Transport Could Curb Holiday Inflation, Says Statistics Chief
Jakarta. Government transport discounts offered during the Christmas and New Year holidays may help ease inflation pressures while stimulating public mobility, according to Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS).
She said travel typically increases at the end of the year, and this time the government is using fare reductions to encourage demand across rail, sea, air, ferry, and toll roads. While higher mobility normally brings inflation risks, Amalia noted that discounted fares can have the opposite effect.
“During earlier holiday periods when transport discounts were applied, including the Eid break, we actually saw reduced inflationary pressure and even deflation in the transport sector,” she said in a Beritasatu TV interview aired Thursday.
According to Amalia, the effect of this year’s holiday mobility on inflation will be reflected in BPS data published in early January 2026.
“Transport fare discounts help protect purchasing power, increase mobility, and keep year-end inflation manageable,” she said.
The government previously announced the following fare reductions:
- Sea Transport (Pelni): 20 percent discount on tickets from December 17, 2025 to January 10, 2026
- Railways: Around 30 percent additional discount for economy class from December 22, 2025 to January 10, 2026
- Air Travel: 13–14 percent discount on economy fares from December 22, 2025 to January 10, 2026
- Ferries: Discounts valid from December 22, 2025 to January 10, 2026
- Toll Roads: 10–20 percent discount across 26 toll segments on December 22, 23, and 31, 2025
The government expects the incentives to support travel demand and prevent price spikes during the peak holiday period.
