Jakarta. Indonesia remains committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060, even as several countries scale back their climate pledges due to domestic financial pressures, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said on Wednesday.

Speaking at the Energy and Mineral Festival in Jakarta -- co-hosted by his ministry and B-Universe Media Holdings -- Bahlil reaffirmed Indonesia’s clean energy targets, including reaching a 23 percent renewable energy mix this year.

“We have committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 through a transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy,” Bahlil said. “However, some of the very countries that helped initiate this global commitment have since pulled out, citing economic challenges at home.”

Indonesia, he added, will continue to pursue clean energy not only for environmental reasons but also for long-term national interest. “Renewable energy is good for us and for the planet. But our transition must also be aligned with the financial realities we face.”

Beyond climate goals, Indonesia still grapples with deep-rooted energy access disparities. Bahlil pointed out that around 5,700 villages across the archipelago remain without electricity, despite decades of independence.

“President Prabowo Subianto has repeatedly stressed the importance of delivering electricity to all Indonesians -- from Aceh to Papua,” Bahlil said.

Meanwhile, Indonesia continues to rely heavily on fossil fuel subsidies to keep energy prices affordable for its citizens, a burden that has grown as the country depends on imports to meet domestic demand.

Indonesia consumes around 8.5 million tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) annually, but domestic production meets less than 1.5 million tons. “We are forced to import roughly 7 million tons of LPG each year,” Bahlil noted.

Global energy supply chains have also become increasingly vulnerable amid rising geopolitical tensions. “We’ve seen heightened instability in the Middle East and Europe -- and just days ago, tensions flared between Thailand and Cambodia,” he added.

These compounding challenges, Bahlil argued, only reinforce Indonesia’s resolve to achieve energy self-sufficiency -- through greater domestic oil and gas production as well as an accelerated shift toward renewable energy adoption.
