Airlangga Says Indonesia Won’t Face US Tariffs Over Russian Oil
Jakarta. Indonesia will not face additional US tariffs over its Russian oil imports because the purchases were made within a window allowed under US rules, Chief of Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto said Wednesday.
“There will be no sanctions. At that time, there was a window when it was allowed, so we were within that window,” Airlangga told reporters on the sidelines of the Antara Business Forum in Jakarta.
The statement comes after US President Donald Trump signed legislation on Sept. 18 authorizing tariffs of up to 100% on goods from countries that meet certain criteria related to Russian oil and gas purchases.
Under the law, the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, the US can impose additional tariffs on the five largest buyers of Russian crude oil or natural gas, as well as countries that knowingly make new purchases of Russian energy starting 30 days after the law was enacted.

Indonesia has been among the countries importing Russian crude, making the new US measures a potential concern for Jakarta.
Airlangga, however, said Indonesia's purchases fell within a period when such transactions were permitted under the US rules.
The new tariff authority has raised concerns over potential spillovers to global trade and energy markets, particularly if countries continue buying Russian oil and gas and face higher tariffs on their exports to the US.
