Hair Donation for Cancer Survivors
Jakarta. Cancer foundation Yayasan Kanker Indonesia, YKI, donated wigs to three cancer survivors at Sasana Marsudi Husada, South Jakarta, on Tuesday.
The donation was part of the "Hair to Share" program. YKI launched this program to foster self-confidence among cancer survivors in need of emotional support due to hair loss. The hair donors even wrote touching love letters for the cancer survivors to lift their spirits up.
The "Hair to Share" program returned after a pandemic-related halt.
Since launched four years ago, thousands of donors from across the archipelago have chopped their locks for wigs.
YKI Lebak Bulus chairwoman Rebecca Angka said her "Hair to Share" program had to close earlier after receiving tons of hair donations. "We will collect the donated hair and send them to the wig makers. We have collected a lot so we will close the program for a while," Rebecca said.
YKI will give the wigs to patients who are suffering from hair loss due to cancer treatment.
"Patients can try the wigs directly at the clinic or we can send them right to their doorsteps," she said.
The "Hair to Share" program also serves as an opportunity for YKI to spread cancer awareness to the younger generations.
Twenty-four-year old Farah hopes to help others in this program. "I want to donate my hair because it can help someone who need rather than waste it and throw it away," Farah said.
Whilst Ayu —a 22-year-old hair donor— revealed she purposely grew her hair when working from home after finding out about the "Hair to Share" on YKI's Instagram account.
"I am willing to grow my hair out to help others. I also invited my friends to participate by growing their hair out which would later be donated to the cancer survivors."
