TikTok Pledges Cooperation After Indonesia Suspends Its License
Jakarta. TikTok has pledged to cooperate with Indonesian authorities after the government temporarily suspended the short video platform’s operating license for allegedly failing to provide complete data on its live-streaming activities during nationwide protests in late August.
A TikTok spokesperson said the company respects local laws and is committed to resolving the matter constructively. “TikTok respects the laws and regulations in the countries where we operate. We are working closely with the Communications and Digital Affairs Ministry to address this issue while ensuring user privacy remains protected,” the spokesperson said on Friday.
The suspension, announced by the Ministry, followed TikTok’s alleged failure to comply with data disclosure requirements related to TikTok Live activities during nationwide riots between August 25 and 30.
Despite the freeze, users reported that the app remained accessible on Friday evening, with content and live-streaming features operating normally.
Alexander Sabar, the ministry’s Director General of Digital Space Oversight, said the decision came after TikTok only submitted partial information on its platform’s traffic, monetization, and gifting features during that period. Authorities suspect some of the online gifts exchanged through the platform may be linked to illegal online gambling activities.
“TikTok was summoned on Sept.16 and given until Sept. 23 to provide complete data. However, the company said it could not submit the information due to internal policy restrictions,” Alexander said.
The ministry’s request was based on Article 21 of Ministerial Regulation No. 5/2020 on Private Electronic System Operators (PSE), which obliges digital platforms to provide access to electronic systems and data for regulatory supervision.
Citing the regulation, the government imposed a temporary suspension of TikTok’s electronic system operator license (TDPSE) as a sanction for non-compliance. Alexander said the move demonstrates the government’s determination to ensure that all digital platforms operating in Indonesia adhere to local laws.
“This is part of our firm stance toward maintaining a safe and transparent digital ecosystem,” he said.
