KPK Urges Finance Minister Purbaya to Report TikTok Gifts
Jakarta. The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has advised Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa to report virtual gifts received during a recent TikTok livestream with his son, Yuda Purboyo Sunu.
The issue emerged after numerous virtual gifts were sent during the livestream on his son’s TikTok account. Some virtual gifts included a whale icon, which carries a value of more than Rp 1 million (about $60) per item.
“Whale gift, more than Rp 1 million. Another whale, thank you,” Yuda said while reading incoming gift notifications during the broadcast on Wednesday.
During the livestream, Purbaya, who was seated beside his son, responded jokingly but also stressed that the gifts were directed to his son, not to him in his capacity as a public official, in order to avoid potential gratification concerns — defined as any gift or benefit given to a public official in relation to their official duties.
KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo advised Purbaya to report or consult about that case.
“If there is any doubt, it can be consulted or reported. Gratification reporting is very easy and can be done online through gol.kpk.go.id, through the gratification control unit at the Finance Ministry, or directly to the KPK,” Budi said.
But he also added that the KPK appreciated Purbaya’s apparent awareness of the potential for gratification, noting that the circulating footage indicated the gifts were intended for his son.
Nevertheless, Budi reminded Purbaya to remain cautious and transparent as a public official. He cited the example of former National Police Chief Hoegeng Iman Santoso, who closed his wife’s flower shop during his tenure to avoid any conflict of interest.
Budi also suggested that disabling the TikTok gift feature could help prevent further controversy. Yuda himself had previously mentioned the possibility of turning off the feature to avoid potential polemics.
