Motorola Inks MoU to Help Protect Citizens in Indonesia’s New Capital
Jakarta. American safety technology firm Motorola Solutions inked Wednesday a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Nusantara authority body to help protect the citizens living in Indonesia’s future capital.
According to Chang Kar Weng, the director for Indonesia-Singapore-Brunei at Motorola, the partnership with the capital agency will be related to the company’s safety and security technologies, among others.
“Motorola is committed to developing technologies and solutions to keep Nusantara and its citizens safe,” Chang was quoted as saying in a press statement issued on Thursday.
The press release also stated that Motorola was working alongside the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), a government agency aimed at advancing American commercial interests in developing economies.
As part of the agreement, Motorola also vowed to implement its technologies, including surveillance videos, mission-critical communications, and control access. According to the press statement, the MoU also includes its participation in the command center pilot project at the end of 2024.
Late last year, the Nusantara authority body launched a blueprint that detailed the government’s smart city ambitions for this yet-to-be-built capital. The document states that Nusantara will have an integrated command and control center (ICCC) which combines CCTV systems to monitor traffic and coordinate emergency services, among others.
Mohammed Ali Berawi, the body's deputy for digital transformation, attributed Motorola’s interest in taking part in the project to this blueprint. Ali said: “This smart city blueprint has attracted many investors and global technology providers to build the new capital together.”
Indonesia is banking on private investments to build the new capital from scratch as state funds will only cover 20 percent of the costs. Early estimates revealed that this capital relocation would cost a whopping $33 billion. The government has spent Rp 4.8 trillion (approximately $295 million) in the Nusantara megaproject so far in 2024 as of April 30. The government has allocated Rp 39.8 trillion to this project for this year alone.
