Indonesia's Trade AI Trial Uncovers Rp 1.2b in Missed Import Duties
Jakarta. The Finance Ministry says its new container-scanning technology and internally developed artificial intelligence system are already starting to lift state revenue as early trials uncover unpaid import duties.
According to Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, the Trade AI system, built in-house by the directorate with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has identified roughly Rp 1.2 billion ($72,084) in additional revenue during its initial test run.
“Trade AI is developed internally, so there’s no major investment so far,” Purbaya said at the inauguration of container scanners at Terminal 3 and Terminal Mustika Alam Lestari in Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, on Friday.
During early trials, the system reviewed around 140–150 import declarations. Trade AI compares customs values with benchmark prices, including data scraped from domestic and overseas marketplaces, allowing officers to quickly detect underpayments.
“From that alone, I easily collected around Rp 1 billion,” he said.
Purbaya noted that the current figure remains small compared to the system’s long-term potential, but the early results reaffirm AI’s ability to strengthen supervision and raise revenue sustainably.
To scale the system nationwide, the government plans further investment in Customs’ digital infrastructure. Purbaya estimates an additional Rp 45 billion will be needed to expand and upgrade Trade AI for broader implementation across Indonesia.
“The more advanced it gets, the bigger the impact should be,” he said.
The ministry expects container scanners and Trade AI to not only plug leakage but also speed up customs processing.
