Swift Diplomacy: Minister Airlangga Discusses Economic Cooperation with Three Key Singapore Leaders in a Day
Singapore. After the conclusion of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) 2024 Ministerial Meeting and the IPEF Clean Economy Investor Forum (June 5-6, 2024), Chief Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto swiftly capitalized on the momentum to promote economic cooperation through a series of meetings.
Starting his agenda on Friday, June 7, Airlangga began the day with a breakfast meeting with Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Gan Kim Yong. Both leaders then co-chaired the 6th Bilateral Working Group Meeting between Indonesia and Singapore.
During this bilateral meeting, the leaders discussed agreements based on technical discussions between the two countries. These were organized into six working groups: Special Economic Zone, Investment, Manpower, Transportation, Agri-Business, and Tourism. Coordinating Minister Airlangga and DPM Gan led the discussions directly, achieving concrete results in these areas.
Following the Bilateral Working Group meeting, Airlangga continued discussions with DPM Gan over lunch, focusing on various strategic issues, particularly the sustainability of economic cooperation programs agreed upon in various bilateral, regional, and multilateral forums.
After his meeting with DPM Gan, Airlangga proceeded to The Istana, the official residence and office of the President of Singapore, to meet with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
In the President's office at The Istana, Airlangga held a warm and productive one-on-one meeting with President Tharman that lasted about 45 minutes, exceeding the scheduled time. They discussed various issues related to the green and agricultural revolutions, supported by Temasek to develop a modern food system, along with other geo-economic topics.
After meeting with President Tharman, Airlangga met with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, accompanied by several officials from the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI). In addition to presenting the outcomes of the Bilateral Working Group discussions, they talked about various economic cooperation issues, including Singapore's support for Indonesia's accession to the OECD and its membership in the CPTPP (The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership). The meeting with PM Wong lasted nearly an hour and was very productive, addressing numerous issues for future cooperation between the two countries.
Airlangga completed the annual Bilateral Working Group meeting and met with three of Singapore's top leaders in one day.
He began with DPM Gan Kim Yong, who also serves as the Minister of Trade and Industry and the head of the Central Bank, followed by a one-on-one meeting with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and concluded with an extensive discussion with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
Accompanying Coordinating Minister Airlangga in these important meetings were Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Susiwijono Moegiarso, Indonesian Ambassador to Singapore Suryopratomo, and a team of experts from the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs.
