Jakarta. Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (RAPP) recently took home the best-performing green industry award from the Industry Ministry.

RAPP is the operating arm of the pulp and paper producer APRIL Group. The award reflects the company’s commitment to supporting Indonesia’s goal of achieving net zero emission by 2060 or sooner. The award also recognizes RAPP’s success in adopting green industry principles in its operations in Riau’s Pangkalan Kerinci with a focus on energy efficiency and managing production waste through environmentally friendly technologies.

The ministry handed over the award at the Annual Indonesia Green Industry Summit (AIGIS) in Jakarta -- an event that sought to strengthen the country’s commitment to slash emissions, adopt eco-friendly technologies, and create a sustainable business ecosystem. Rita Alim, the deputy director of external relations at APRIL Group, accepted the award on behalf of RAPP.

“I would like to extend our utmost appreciation to the companies who have received this best-performing green industry award. This award reflects the company’s success in resource efficiency and good waste management,” Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang said.

The ministry wants the manufacturing sector to achieve net zero emission through decarbonization by 2050 -- a decade earlier than the national target. To slash emissions, RAPP as part of APRIL has installed 26 megawatts of solar panels. It is planning to increase it to 50 megawatts by 2030. As part of its energy efficiency strategy, APRIL also uses recovery boilers to reuse production waste as biomass.

Clean and renewable energy has powered 88 percent of APRIL’s operations in Riau. The company wants to increase this clean energy mix to 90 percent by 2030 in line with its sustainable business blueprint: APRIL2030.

“The award motivates us to continue to develop sustainable and quality products in line with the government’s goal of unlocking the green economy and support the Industry Ministry’s goal for a net zero emission by 2050,” Sihol Aritonang, the president director of RAPP, said.

RAPP embraces sustainability principles in every aspect of its operations in line with the Sustainability Forest Management Policy (SFMP) 2.0. The company has had the green industry certification since 2019. It also pledged to implement corporate social and environmental responsibility initiatives in the fields of education, health, and community empowerment.
