Jakarta. The government continues to show its commitment to achieving the national net zero emissions (NZE) target, despite the fact that one of the concept’s main initiators, the United States, withdrew from its pledge

Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said Indonesia has remained committed from the beginning to achieving NZE by 2060 or sooner, by increasing the renewable energy mix and optimizing the use of available resources.

"Several states that initially joined the initiative to promote net zero emissions have since withdrawn," Bahlil said at the 2025 Energy and Mineral Festival at Hutan Kota Plataran.

"For us in Indonesia, we agree to continue promoting the energy transition and renewable energy, because it is a good step to help protect the planet," he added.

According to him, to maximize the potential of renewable energy, the government will utilize natural sources such as wind, geothermal, solar, and nuclear energy. However, the transition from fossil fuels to renewables cannot be implemented all at once—it must be done gradually.

This is because the energy transition toward a "green" economy requires advanced technology and significant funding. Furthermore, as the cost of producing energy from renewables tends to be relatively high, Bahlil said that the government will strive to offer economically affordable prices to the public.

Executive Director of the Center for Energy and Mining Law Studies (Pushep), Bisman Bakhtiar, said that the government has already taken several steps to achieve NZE. However, to accelerate this goal, specific regulations need to be established, namely, the New and Renewable Energy Law (EBET).

According to Bisman, the ratification of the bill has yet to reach a resolution. The regulation remains in limbo because parliament and the government have not yet agreed on several key points.

This is unfortunate, as the bill is crucial to support and provide a legal foundation for the acceleration of renewable energy utilization, the energy transition, and the achievement of NZE.

"Unfortunately, to this day, the bill remains unfinished. It has been under discussion between the House of Representatives and the government for more than five years but has not been completed," he concluded.
