Jakarta. Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka on Wednesday urged schools across Indonesia to ensure a safe and supportive environment for students, free from any form of bullying or violence, following last week’s explosion at SMAN 72 High School in North Jakarta.

“Schools must be safe and comfortable places for our children; spaces free from bullying,” Gibran said during the 2025 National Coordination Meeting on Stunting Reduction in Jakarta.

He called on regional governments to strengthen education oversight and take proactive measures to prevent bullying and other harmful behavior in schools.

“I ask all regional leaders to be vigilant, sensitive, and remind one another so that incidents like the one that happened at a Jakarta high school will never happen again,” he said.

Authorities have identified the SMAN 72 explosion suspect as a student at the school. Because he is underage, he is classified as a child in conflict with the law (ABH). The blast occurred during Friday prayers at the school mosque on November 7, injuring dozens.

Jakarta Police’s Director of General Crimes, Chief Commissioner Iman Imannudin, said the suspect faces charges under multiple laws, including the Child Protection Law and the Criminal Code articles related to severe assault and the use of explosives.

Investigators from the National Counterterrorism Unit (Densus 88) said the student allegedly learned to assemble explosive devices by accessing bomb-making instructions on the dark web.
