VP Candidates to Return to JCC for 2nd Debate
Jakarta. The Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) has been selected once again as the venue for the second vice-presidential debate scheduled for this weekend.
The three vice-presidential candidates -- Muhaimin Iskandar, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and Mohammad Mahfud MD -- will engage in discussions covering a wide range of topics, including environmental issues, agriculture, energy, and food security.
The decision to use JCC as the venue was announced by the General Election Commission (KPU) on Monday evening.
KPU Commissioner August Mellaz explained that this choice was made because all three candidates are already familiar with the setting. Additionally, using the same venue allows organizers to streamline technical preparations more efficiently.
The names of the moderators and panelists for the debate on January 21 will be disclosed on Wednesday.
In a departure from previous debates involving presidential candidates and their running mates, the moderators for this debate will have the authority to direct participants to stay within the designated topics during exchanges, according to August.
During the first vice-presidential debate on December 22, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the eldest son of President Joko Widodo, captured attention with his poise and adept handling of debate themes. Despite being relatively new to politics, Gibran showcased composure and knowledge, surprising many observers with his well-informed responses.
Known for his reserved speaking style, the 36-year-old mayor of Solo demonstrated a significant shift, providing detailed explanations and confidently addressing inquiries from his more seasoned political rivals, Muhaimin and Mahfud.
As the candidates gear up for the second encounter, Gibran will enter the debate no longer as the underdog.
