University of Indonesia Investigates Alleged Sexual Harassment in Student Chat Group
Depok, W. Java. The Faculty of Law at the University of Indonesia (UI) said it is investigating allegations of sexual harassment involving students after screenshots of a private chat group containing inappropriate and potentially abusive content circulated online.
In a statement posted on its official social media account, the faculty said it had received reports regarding the matter and was aware of the spread of screenshots allegedly involving students and containing content that could indicate harassment and sexual misconduct.
“The faculty strongly condemns all forms of behavior that degrade human dignity and contradict legal and academic ethical values,” the statement said. “We are currently conducting a thorough, careful, and comprehensive verification process.”
The faculty added that the investigation is being carried out with due regard for fairness and caution. It said firm action would be taken if violations are confirmed, including potential coordination with authorities if criminal elements are found.
“The safety and well-being of all members of the academic community are our top priority. Safe reporting channels and necessary support are available for those who need them,” the statement added.
The case gained public attention on Monday after the topic began trending on the social media platform X, following posts from an account that shared alleged screenshots of conversations from a student chat group. The posts claimed that the messages included derogatory remarks and objectification of women.
The authenticity of the screenshots has not been independently verified, and the identities of those allegedly involved have not been officially disclosed.
The posts sparked widespread criticism online, with some users expressing concern over the behavior described and calling for accountability. Others urged restraint and cautioned against drawing conclusions before the investigation is complete.
The Faculty of Law called on the public not to circulate unverified information and to respect the ongoing process.
“We urge all parties to exercise restraint, refrain from spreading unverified information, and respect the process currently underway,” the statement said.
