Two Foreign Hikers Detained for Drone Use on Mount Rinjani
Lombok. Authorities at Mount Rinjani National Park in West Nusa Tenggara have detained two foreign nationals for carrying drones while trekking in the park. Officials are still determining the sanctions to be imposed.
Mount Rinjani, Indonesia’s second-highest volcano, is a premier adventure destination and part of a UNESCO Global Geopark.
Park spokesperson Ma’ruf Hadi said the violation was discovered by officers at the Pelawangan Sembalun campsite on Saturday, when two foreign hikers from different trekking operators were found carrying drones.
“We will ensure strict sanctions against the trekking organizers assisting the two foreign hikers,” Ma’ruf said.
After securing the drones, officers also found a portable speaker carried by another hiker. Such equipment is prohibited within the national park and has been temporarily confiscated until the individuals descend.
Ma’ruf added that all trekking operators are aware of the rules governing prohibited items in the Mount Rinjani area. Authorities are now investigating the organizers involved.
The sanctions aim to create a deterrent effect, ranging from warnings to blacklisting, while also protecting the park’s wildlife and ecosystem.
Unauthorized drone use can disrupt natural habitats, especially without proper permits. Special permits are required and can cost up to Rp2 million ($116) in non-tax state revenue fees.
