Jakarta. The Indonesian police recently stopped two Chinese citizens from trying to leave the country after stealing jewelry and some cash in a burglary worth totalling Rp 4.5 billion (around $273,296).

The burglars had stolen the jewelry at an elite housing complex in Tangerang, Banten. The cops had caught them at the country’s main gateway Soekarno-Hatta airport.

“The victim suffered Rp 4.5 billion in financial loss because of their wrongdoings,” Tangerang police chief Raden Muhammad Jauhari said Thursday.

The caught culprits were Feng Shangwei (49) and Huang Xiaobo (39).  They were trying to fly to China when the cops apprehended them at the airport. Both are currently in detention, and can face up to 7 years in prison.

An accomplice, known by the initials CW (40), had already fled the country.

The burglars broke into the victim’s home, which was unattended, on August 25. It was then they took the cash and jewelry -- a crime all caught on CCTV footage, according to the police.

The Indonesian authorities are currently in talks with the Chinese Embassy following the incident.
